Legend has it that the Grey River is guarded by two dueling Tuatara head to head on opposite sides of the Mawhera (Grey) River. The Tuatara Trail Run follows the spine of the Tuatara on the south side of the river. Historically, the West Coast Alpine Club has run a “Marathon” race over the pole track to Kaiata. This Tuatara Trail Run is the revamped version of this marathon.

The Tuatara Trail run itself is a 6km trail run with 350m of vert.

The Corse consists of benched track, muddy bog pits, steep uphills and a small bit of gravel and tarseal road. 

Competitors are advised to run the track beforehand as it is not very well marked.
